By Paul Money. Short-focus ED refractors are a highly popular and versatile class of telescope that can be happily used in a variety of roles from the purely visual through to wide-field imaging purposes. What you get is a tube-only system with a finder shoe bracket, tube rings and a small Vixen-style mounting bar, along with a dual-speed Crayford anti-backlash focuser.
For this model we only learn that the doublet objective lens has one Extra-Low Dispersion ED glass element and that Schott glass is used for the crown element. We used our own eyepieces which included 26mm, 10mm and 6. One thing to note: the standard 9mm Sky-Watcher 1. With our reliable 26mm eyepiece we found Regulus pin sharp across three quarters of the view with some distortion towards the edges.
Noting that Arcturus was well above the horizon, we sought out the globular cluster M3, and were rewarded with very satisfying views using the 10mm and 6. The focuser has 38mm of travel with a 12mm thickness adaptor at the end while our own adaptor added another 47mm giving us more leeway for focusing. Small apo class refractors such as the original Equinox 80ED used to be quite heavy for their size but the latest small scopes from Sky-Watcher and other manufacturers have brought the weight down considerably and the 72ED DS-Pro is no exception.
Indeed, we used it to take images with our Star Adventurer, and found the whole system quick and easy to set up, a great incentive to invest in the telescope. The front lens element consists of a doublet objective lens with extra-low dispersion ED glass and a crown element composed of Schott glass. The dew shield is of the fixed variety but can be taken off for lens cleaning. The tube is attached to a mount via two tube rings and a short Vixen-style, dovetail bar.
The focuser has 38mm of focus travel and is a dual-speed, ratio, 2-inch, fine-focusing rack and pinion design with tension adjustment underneath. Inside is plenty of room and cut-outs for other equipment such as diagonals and eyepieces. It can be locked for secure storage. Our rating. November 29, at pm. They are 10s of light years in length and found near the edge of a large dark molecular cloud and are composed of sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. Bay of Islands, New Zealand After the initial alignment, their optical system is more resistant to misalignment than the reflector telescopes. The glass surface inside the tube is sealed from the atmosphere so it rarely needs cleaning.
Sky-Watcher Evostar 72 mm APO Refractor - S11180
Since the tube is closed off from the outside, air currents and effects due to changing temperatures are eliminated. This means that the images are steadier and sharper than those from a reflector telescope of the same size.
Combined with the moderate focal ratio, this results in images with visibly less chromatic aberration than you find in refractors with a similar aperture but faster focal ratio. In addition to the lack of chromatic aberration's annoying halo of unfocused violet light around bright stars and solar system objects, there is no loss in contrast such as you will find in reflector and catadioptric scopes that have a secondary or diagonal mirror hanging in the light path to scatter light.
The mm Sky-Watcher doublet optics are even more appealing when you consider that this Sky-Watcher apo is loaded with features other manufacturers charge extra for or don't even have available - such as an 8 x 50mm right-angle finderscope, a 2" dielectric star diagonal with 1.
Its light weight only 6. Considering its surprisingly low price for an apochromatic doublet, adding in the extra features you get at no extra cost, and in view of the great optical performance that comes as standard equipment, the mm Sky-Watcher PRO ED is a terrific buy! Apochromatic ED doublet refractor optics: mm 3.
EvoStar ED Doublet APO Refractors
This ED element produces superior sharpness and color correction by minimizing the chromatic aberration, the "false" color fringing seen around bright objects when light rays pass through standard crown-and-flint doublet objectives. The result is to reduce spurious color halos and fringing to vanishingly low levels. Fully multicoated optics: Each air-to-glass surface in the Sky-Watcher Evostar ED doublet objective lens has MHC Metallic High-Transmission Coating antireflection multicoatings on all air-to-glass surfaces for high light transmission, minimal light scatter, and excellent contrast.
Internal light baffles: Contrast-enhancing internal light baffles in the tube and focuser drawtube and a specially darkened tube interior provide dark sky backgrounds and high terrestrial contrast. Dew shield: The supplied dew shield slows the formation of dew on the lens in cold weather to extend your undisturbed observing time.
It also improves the contrast, similar to the effect of the lens shade on a camera lens, when observing during the day or when there is excessive ambient light at night, such as a neighbor's backyard security light. The 6. A slip-on metal dust cap is standard. Dual speed 2" Crayford focuser: The precision-made no-backlash focuser has dual-speed focusing.
There are two coarse focusing knobs. The right knob also has a smaller concentric knob with reduction gear microfine focusing. The large focus knobs have ribbed gripping surfaces so they are easy to operate, even while wearing gloves or mittens in cold weather.

Finderscope: The Sky-Watcher Evostar ED comes with an 8 x 50mm right-angle finderscope that is fully-multicoated to insure maximum brightness and contrast. Ultra high contrast allows the subtlest of details to be easily scrutinized under conditions of good seeing. The petite silhouette of the SW ED-APO 80 mm makes for an excellent compact, portable telescope that travels light and fits a small space.
The Moon also exhibits striking crater detail along the lunar terminator. Refractors—the Ultimate Imaging Instruments In a given aperture size, refractors will always exhibit sharper images than other optical designs because the refractor concentrates more light into the central airy-disk and first diffraction rings.
There is no diffraction pattern interference caused by a diagonal mirror, or secondary mirror being suspended in the optical path central obstruction as is the case with reflectors. If you are on a quest for the ultimate in pristine, near textbook-perfect astronomical imaging, look no further!
Sky-Watcher ED apochromatic refractors deliver dramatic coal-black skies and faithful, contrast-rich views of planetary and deep-space phenomenon that are second to none. Sky-Watcher ED-APO refractors are the logical choice as an investment in advanced instrumentation for exceptional viewing or photography.
This results in the best color correction for an ED doublet lens. Schott is the recognized world leader in glass utilized for precision optical lens systems, including medical instrumentation and famous-brand camera lenses. While Schott glass is only used in selected models, all other models utilize top-quality, Grade-A glass from perhaps less famous but, nonetheless, highly respected, high-quality glass manufacturers. Pride and Perfection in Optical Manufacturing Every lens element is individually inspected for purity and absence of striae and other image-degrading imperfections.
Every lens is pitched polished to exacting standards of optical fabrication and performance by highly skilled opticians utilizing state-of-the-art methodology and rigidly controlled optical testing procedures. The result is high-quality, diffraction-limited optics performing to the theoretical limits of their respective aperture sizes. All lenses are uniformly air-spaced in their cell housings.
Using only the finest fabrication materials available, Sky-Watcher APO refractors are manufactured to painstakingly rigorous, exacting standards of optical and mechanical quality to insure the amateur astronomer peak performance and a great experience each and every time a Sky-Watcher ED-APO is taken into the field.
We know the amateur astronomer has very high expectations regarding astronomical equipment purchases. Sky-Watcher has been delivering consistent satisfaction for over a decade. Light-Baffled Optical Systems The objective lens cell is light-baffled to reject stray, unfocused light. The draw tube is likewise baffled to insure optimum contrast.
The tube interior is flat blackened to help prevent unfocused internal light reflections from reaching the focal plane.
